IMPORTATION

As many of you are aware, the importation of Exhibition of Exhibition Budgerigars from the U.K. commenced in 1990 and, due to percieved health risks was banned in 1995. Since then, only the importation of pigeons from approved countrries has been allowed.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestries (AFFA) http://www.affa.gov.au/ has undertaken an Import Risk Analysis (IRA) to investigate the possibility of lifting import bans. The latest Memorandum indicates that the Draft IRA report is nearing completion and is expected to be released soon. It is expected the panel will need to meet formally on at least one more occasion to finalise the draft IRA report. The next meeting is planned for 4-5 July 2002. The draft IRA report is circulated for 60 days public comment. Following consideration of stakeholder comments, the panel will be able to finalise the IRA. To sum this up, if the IRA is favourable, budgerigars may again be imported from overseas. There is no information yet available on any countries of origin.
